At the beginning of the appointment, clients will be asked to answer questions regarding their medical history and any medications they are taking. Client consent forms will be completed before any treatment. Blood pressure is also taken.
An intraoral and extraoral examination is then done. This includes screening for oral cancer where we check your face, neck, mouth, throat and tongue. An assessment of your gums will be conducted. We take measurements of your gums which helps us figure out where you fall in terms of gum disease. A dental screening will be done to detect early signs of tooth decay.
The information gathered during the assessment will help form a treatment plan specific to your needs.  Referrals will be made to other health care professionals as needed.

Scaling and Root Planing

This is the removal of calculus (tartar) and plaque biofilm from above and below the gum line. It is critical for the optimal health of the gums and surrounding bone. Some people call it "scraping" or "picking" but it is much more than that. Scaling/root planing removes disease causing bacteria to help promote healthy teeth and gums - which contribute to better overall health. Some people require more scaling/root planing appointments than others.
Your optimal frequency of scaling/root planing with be discussed with you at your appointment.

Plaque biofilm and external stains are removed with the polish. Common sources of staining include: poor oral hygiene, liquid iron supplements, tars from tobacco, and pigments from food and beverages such as coffee and wine.
Polishing may not be recommended at every visit, or it may be recommended more often. You and Holly can establish a frequency that accommodates your needs.

This mineral is applied to the teeth to strengthen enamel and help prevent decay (cavities). It can help reduce cavities in people who are at high risk for decay. Holly can help determine your level of risk of decay and recommend the appropriate interval in which to offer fluoride.
Fluoride free options are also available.

This is a procedure where a desensitizing agent is applied to areas of the teeth where the client has sensitivity. You may experience this if you have gingival (gum) recession, or loss of tooth enamel through wear, toothbrush abrasion, or acid erosion.

Oral Health Education

This is one of the most important aspects of dental hygiene care: encouraging clients to understand products and preventive therapies.
Holly is here to help you navigate the MANY dental products available. She will remove the overwhelming burden of what tools may be best for you, and how you can use them effectively.
Another component of oral health education is giving the client the information s/he needs to make informed choices about his/her dental hygiene care. Holly  promotes active participation and decision making when it comes to your individualized treatment plan. She wants to work with you to make goals that are achievable, so that you are successful in your dental hygiene care.

It also helps protect against bone fractures of the face and provides a cushion during non impact sports where grinding or clenching may occur. Some examples of sports that may require a mouthguard include: hockey, soccer, football, martial arts, boxing, wrestling and weight lifting.
